Picture book delight

This poem was inspired by a discussion in one of my Facebook groups which was 'What is the most important part of a picture book?'

Picture Book Delight

Characters, story, pictures...
Which is the biz?
What makes a
picture book delight?
Is the message important?
Must it warm the heart?
For me, all have a part to play,
working together in harmony,
creating a sum
greater than the whole,
producing a wonderful,
magical synergy.

What do you think? What is the most important part of a picture book for you?

  1. Well I think the pictures and the words BOTH have tremendous importance - but ... probably the pictures even more, as kids (for the most part) are so visual. The pics lead them into the wonderful world of literature and then they grow into loving to read also.

  2. I think you're right, Marvin. Although the pictures alone without the text would not have the same impact - they both have to work together. Perhaps 60-40 weighted in favour of the pictures?
